There has been much debate in our city about cameras. Cameras may be worthwhile in some heavy traffic areas to record accidents or crimes, but don’t do much prophylactically. Cameras cannot stop crime or reckless driving in real time. They can only record or alert authorities after the fact. We need more police presence in traffic areas like our schools to protect our children. Officers respond immediately to crimes in progress and their presence alone can deter crime, including speeding in school zones. The addition of rumble strips would be an added deterrent to speeding and a more visible police presence would also help build trust and relationships within the community, making it easier for our residents to report crimes and collaborate with law enforcement. The most effective safety strategy would be to balance all three tools.
